Love and Psychopaths

Love is a supposedly unique emotion. It is very played up in modern society. Quotes like "love conquers all" perpetuate this unrealistic fantasy people have regarding the emotion. A common question is, "do psychopaths love?" I have heard a few claim love for them is possible, and I'm sure they're right in their own way, but for me the conventional definition of love is far out of my capabilities. Love is a "profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person."

Now, that's not to say I don't have my own version of affection. There is a definite delineation from those I dislike and those I like. The difference, is my affection is more logical. Everyone around me is ranked based on usefulness, threat level and various other factors. As soon as someone's threat level usurps their usefulness level I dispose of them without fail. It is irrational to continually attach yourself to someone who continues to prove themselves distasteful, yet, in the name of love I see that done every day.

Love is not something I experience, but it is a tool I use on occasion to get something I want. I won't lie and pretend to be an absolute block of ice, however. I do like people/things that do what I want them to do. I also have a particular fondness for cats. But what separates my fondness from Normal's love, is the simple fact that my fondness does not make me see anything through rose colored glasses. My affection is conditional, it is logical and it is not a warm and fuzzy feeling. It's more like an acceptance that said thing, is a benefit and should for the time being, remain taken care of. Even this though, is a rare occurrence.

That's really interesting. I've heard S/Ps say before that they 'love' differently.

I have no idea if I know what love is. I care a lot for friends and family. I call this love, but I don't really know.

Romantically I can't tell the difference between love and obsession.

::shrug:: I think love is what you make of it.

I'm a sociopath with some heavy schizoid tendencies, which for all intents and purposes is quite similar to a psychopath. So although we may see eye to eye on many things, there are some marked differences.

What I lack first and foremost, that eliminates the possibility of real love, is compassion. Without it, you can't have love. It's impossible.

I can however have the Chemical Basis of Love, that is, chemical obsession with another. It's a weird brain drug cocktail though without compassion, because the obsession with the person is like fulfilling a need, and it certainly isn't always affectionate. They become my possessions, and many times I forget that they think they have a right to their own life, as opposed to what I want.

I've only had this happen to me once, and never since then. I had quite a string of relationships, and most of them fall into what you describe with yours. To better illustrate what I go through, you should check out this link. That's very close to me.

And ME, believe it or not, is not what he claims to be. He's a lot more like you and me than your garden variety sociopath, if you catch my drift.

I've noticed most, if not all, psychopaths wear masks. Not just me. The anonymity of the web doesn't take that habit away, it simply lends opportunity for a different, more unique and less often used mask to be put on. As the title of my blog suggests, I personally love to peak behind the masks of others. People are often confused with how the actual psychopaths on these various blogs act, versus the description of how psychopaths are 'supposed' to act they've seen in the media.

They think the moronic antisocials parading about, describing in gratuitous detail their every crime and faux pas are the 'real' sociopaths, and the quietly observing and deceivingly agreeable people are not.

A prime example of who I would deem, a very subtle, yet extremely dangerous psychopath is Zhawq. He displays all of the understated traits of a victimizing psychopath. Yet on the surface he appears somewhat harmless and perhaps mistakenly diagnosed. That's why I love to read his blog. I like to imagine all of the people that no doubt walked unseeingly into a nightmare upon meeting him.

But that's just my hobby. I'm an observer. I realize not everyone gets the enjoyment out of it that I do.

ZKM, as you said, I think people like "love" because it's rare. What can you possibly call as "love" in the most part of the universe or the nature?
People obviously try hard to justify it. They create an image like "The sun loves trees, the sky loves us"
XD

Thank you for insightful and honest post. My cat(I read that cat is legally not considered as your property- thus whatever your cat did in your neighbor's house you are not responsible for it)is reading it next to me. Cat is something like a sporadically moving warm suspicious object to me. But do you like it? I love it! It's totally the most attractive creature in the world.

Sorry for purposeless joke, and thank you for the post.
